Several weeks ago, we had the opportunity to visit Creative Growth in Oakland. For those of you who don't know about Creative Growth, they are the world's first non-profit art center dedicated to artists with developmental, physical, and mental disabilities.
This art center provides professional opportunities to over 150 adults representing various media including fiber arts, wood, painting, ceramics, drawing, printmaking, photography, and video animation. We saw these artists in action. They were in a large room and every media had its own space. As we walked through this large area, the artists were thrilled to show up their unique works. It was truly an exciting experience. Wish I lived closer as I would definitely become involved in such a wonderful place.
They also have a Gallery where you can purchase bags with their art work stamped on it, paintings, etc.
They are exhibitions in other galleries and museums internationally.
Recently they celebrated their 40th Anniversary! Happy Anniversary with many more to come!
When you are in the area, please set a side some time to visit them. You will be pleasantly surprised to see all the creative work under one roof!
